ALDER

"You see this? This tree isn't brown. Its bark is normally a silvery color. What you see here isn't bark. It's lichen. The whole tree's covered in it, it forms a sort of crust that helps protect the tree. The lichen benefits by having somewhere to grow, and being out of the way of at least some animals, and the tree benifits by being protected from damage. Also the fungus in the lichen- Oh! Yeah, on the subject of mutually beneficial relationships! Lichen is actually a combination of two seperate species of organisms! Like this one I think is a certain type of fungus, along with some algae, that have evolved and adapted to work together to form this lichen. The algae photosynthesises and- ...wait, you look bored. Are you bored? I was talking for a while, sorry. Uh, let's talk about something else."
