Red
The mind of a dead man, scanned and brought back to life in the form of a robot. The man, sickly and dying, once willing to go along with the procedure, had changed his mind along the way, and been ignored.
The leader of the project, the man's sister, would not allow him to back down. She would not allow him to die. She overruled him, justifying it by reasoning that his change of heart was simply a symptom of the disease damaing his brain, and that despite all evidence to the contrary, he was too mentally compromised to be able to make his own decisions.
There was a small issue, though. Emotions aren't solely formed in the brain. There are lots of different parts all over the body that produce chemicals that affect one's mood, so a scan of someone's brain would not necessarily be accurate without some sort of supplementary program to simulate this. And when Red was first woken up, and immediately attacked his sister, it was clear that the program needed tweaking.
And when Red was woken up and yelled at everyone, it was clear that the program needed tweaking.
And when Red was woken up and began to sob, lamenting a supposed lack of agency, it was clear that the program needed tweaking.
And when Red was woken up and stared off blankly into space, it was clear that the program needed tweaking.
And when Red was woken up, and he was polite, friendly, and agreeable, just like his old self, it was clear that the program was perfect.
- Unable to properly feel or process negative emotions.
- Struggles with sense of self.
- Sees himself the way he has been treated, as something that exists purely for the sake of others, whose only purpose is to make others feel better. That his emotions do not matter.
- Lonely, and feels trapped, but unable to fully reckon with or comprehend this.
- Smiles and acts upbeat, pushing away all the emotions he's physically unable to properly deal with.
- When his sister passed away he felt nothing.
